Intestinal cleanse is by far the most important form of detox required by our bodies. When we talk of detox, we think about cleansing the liver, the kidney, the blood but the last thing on our minds is the intestines, and more specifically, the colon. These intestines are the most susceptible organs to toxic infections as this is where all the toxic substances that are to be excreted from our bodies end up. Hence, these intestines also require detoxifying, commonly referred to as intestinal cleansing. Due to our unhealthy diets, toxins have a tendency of getting trapped within these intestines, leading either to serious bacterial infections such as by Candida albicans or bowel cancer.
In this advanced age, intestinal cleanse can be done surgically via colon hydrotherapy, but I would like to concentrate more on the natural and herbal way of cleansing the intestines. This is by far considered a much easier and cheaper way of detoxifying the colon. The main herbs used to achieve colon cleansing are:
Cascara sagrada - this herb is native to the American Indian community and mainly contains anthraquinones. It has a double effect in the body as it effectively cleanses the intestines and promotes the production of bile, hence detoxifying the liver.
Rhubarb roots - This has been used since time immemorial as a purgative. This means that they heal constipations by easing the passage of wastes out of the colon and reduce the remaining of any residue in the rectum.
Grapefruit - These nutritious fruits contain Vitamin C which is a good antioxidant to the body and also contain pectin, which confers an antimicrobial affect to the intestines.
Fennel Seed - this is a recommended intestinal cleansing remedy as it is very high in fibre. Although it is highly effective, it is not recommended for children as their bowels are considered too tender for its rigorous mode of action.
Psyllium - This is a common intestinal cleansing herb which is used as a purgative by swelling the stool and is known to assist in the regeneration of the colon cells.
Papaya fruit - This fruit is highly recommended for children and an excellent intestinal cleanser as it dissolves compacted wastes. This in turn prevents the occurrence of constipation among weaned infants and consequently prevents the occurrence of piles in children.
Dandelion root - The roots of the dandelion plant have been commonly used for intestinal cleansing and the fact that they also function in detoxifying the liver by stimulating and purifying bile production is an added advantage.
Peppermint - This herb has been used as a spice for a long time. It also functions in colon cleansing by reducing constipation and curbing indigestion. It has an added advantage to women as it also reduces menstrual cramps.
Black Walnut Hulls - This herb is known for its antiseptic, antigermicidal and antiparasitic effect. This has made it be highly acclaimed for destroying Candida albicans. It is also a very reliable laxative.
Garlic bulbs - Garlic has been not only the most convenient blood cleanser but also an intestinal cleanser. It is known for its antimicrobial effect and protecting the internal organs from blocking.
Ginseng - The ancient Chinese herb that is known to detoxify the entire body. It also relaxes the body from tension; the best remedy for a long day. Although it is quite efficient in intestinal cleansing, expectant mothers and hypoglycaemic individuals should avoid it.
There are so many herbs that effectively function in intestinal cleansing, depending on the type of problem, and all we need to do is take advantage of God’s gift to us.
