Our bodies contain alcohol up to a certain level beyond which it starts becoming dangerous. Detoxing from alcohol therefore implies the reduction of excess amounts of toxic alcohol percentage from the body of an alcoholic. The process is brought about by change of diet by the victim, abstaining from alcohol intake and most important through medication. This process varies for everyone depending on the level of detoxification but it is not possible without the support of friends and families of the victim, together with the commitment of the affected.
The place where detoxing from alcohol is done depends on the level of detoxification you want. For the average drinker the process can be done from home but for the extreme or complicated cases this is done in a medical institution through inpatient detoxification. This is especially in cases where the patient has symptoms such as hallucination, violence and withdrawal.
Detoxification done at home, the time taken in the whole process depends on how much the person has been drinking and for how long he has been drinking. The deeper one is into alcoholism, the longer the whole process will take. But the whole process involves pulling away from alcohol till the body is free of the toxins. All drinkers know that this is easier said than done and therefore it takes a lot of self control and discipline in order to pull through with the process.
During this time, depending on how much one had been drinking, one may experience discomforting withdrawal symptoms such as cold sweats, nausea and headaches. The withdrawal symptoms become a part of the detoxification process the longer a person drinks. Therefore it is recommended that if a person has been drinking much and for long, the process of detoxing from alcohol should be done in a medical facility. This is especially because the abrupt reduction of alcohol can have extreme withdrawal symptoms such as hallucinations. In addition, in a detoxification facility, there are drugs engineered to make the whole pain go away.
In the facilities dedicated to help with detoxing from alcohol, medication is used to detoxify heavy drinkers. This process is what is commonly known as pharmacological detoxification. The patients here are given drugs which will help them through this process. The most common drugs used are benzodiazepines which help to reduce anxiety and insomnia that the patients go through for a couple of days when they are in the facility. But there are dangers which are faced when the drugs are mixed with huge doses of alcohol. A drug such as diazepam is dangerous when mixed with alcohol and therefore there is the need for caution as these drugs are used.
The most common diet for a person detoxing from alcohol is protein rich with good amounts of fiber and a lot of water. The session mostly takes at most 6 weeks.
